SYDNEY June 14 AAP - A man who whipped a Muslim convert as punishment for drinking alcohol and taking drugs because of a "contorted" belief in Sharia law has been jailed for at least 16 months.
Earlier this year, Magistrate Brian Moloney found Wasim Fayed, 45, Zakaryah Raad, 21, Tolga Cifki, 21, and Gengiz Coskin, 22, guilty of assaulting Christian Martinez in July 2011.
In the Central Local Court on Friday, Mr Maloney sentenced Fayed to a maximum two years' imprisonment for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He handed down suspended 18-month sentences to the other three men, who he said were easily led by Fayed.
The court heard Fayed, also known as Fadi Alemaddin, whipped Mr Martinez 40 times with an electric cord in his Silverwater home while the other men held him down on his bed.
