The EDL demonstration was a march from Tower Bridge to Aldgate, though it was originally intended to go further into Tower Hamlets. A counter-demonstration was arranged by UAF with the Islamic Forum Europe and Tower Hamlets Council workers and was based in Altab-Ali Park in Whitechapel. The mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, opposed the march but failed to ban it completely.

This video shows the EDL marching over Tower Bridge and up The Minories and also shows good footage of UAF, communists, anarchists and Muslims clashing with the police on Mansell Street. I also caught some of the speech by EDL leader Tommy Robinson who was later detained by police for "incitement".

I interviewed a few anti-EDL demonstrators; socialists, anti-fascists, the English disco lovers (EDL), Bengali Muslims and others. Surprisingly, despite many saying they were concerned for the community, hardly anyone seemed to actually live in Tower Hamlets!

Zionist Kerry lobbying for planned US strike against Syria

US Secretary of State John Kerry continues efforts to gain support from the European countries for a planned military attack on Syria.

During his visit to France, the top zionist US diplomat said that the potential strike already has the support of “a number of countries, in the double digits.”

“There are a number of countries in the double digits, who are prepared to take military action,” Kerry said at a joint press conference with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Saturday.

“This is not the time to be silent spectators to slaughter,’’ he said. ‘‘This is not the time to allow a dictator unfettered use of some of the heinous weapons on earth.’’

Washington’s campaign to bolster support for military action comes despite the fact that the European Union said any strike on Syria should wait until after UN inspectors publish their report over the alleged use of chemical weapons in the country.

The Obama administration has claimed that the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was behind a deadly chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus last month. The Syrian government has denied the allegations.

European Union foreign ministers also blamed the August 21 chemical attack on Assad’s government, but they did not endorse military action.

In his weekly radio address on Saturday, President Barack Obama called on Americans to back his plan for launching an attack on Syria.

“This would not be another Iraq or Afghanistan,” Obama said. “I know that the American people are weary after a decade of war, even as the war in Iraq has ended, and the war in Afghanistan is winding down. That’s why we’re not putting our troops in the middle of somebody else’s war.”

Many Republican and Democratic lawmakers are against Obama’s request for Congress to authorize the use of military force against Syria.

Earlier this week, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a measure that would authorize a strike. The first votes by the full Senate could come on Wednesday.

Obama administration officials have reached out directly to one-third of Congress in the last two weeks – at least 60 senators and 125 House members – with more contacts to come, a White House aide told Politico.

The pro-Israel lobbying group, AIPAC, will reportedly have a significant role next week in support of the Syria resolution, AIPAC officials said. The group’s lobbyists and their supporters have been speaking directly to a number of lawmakers, especially senators.

A tweet on the EDL website stated: "Tommy's been arrested for incitement."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A 30-year-old man was arrested for breaching section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986 and inciting others to breach section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986. He has been taken to a central London police station where he currently remains."

The far-right EDL had lost a High Court battle over where they are allowed to demonstrate.

They had wanted to rally in an area in Tower Hamlets, east London, which they say is "subject to Sharia law", but Judge Mr Justice King yesterday ruled that a police decision to impose restrictions over fears of "serious public disorder" was reasonable and proportionate.

A historic meeting took place in Aqaba between Chaim Weizmann and Emir Feisal, one of the heads of the Arab rebellion against the Turks, and a British ally. The two leaders discussed cooperation between the Jewish and Arab national movements. After a few meetings they signed "The Faisal-Weizmann Agreement" in the year 1919. The main points of this agreement included an Arab recognition of the Balfour Declaration and an obligation of the Jews to assist in the development of an Arab state. Tommy Gets Arrested Again!

Hundreds of English Defence League (EDL) supporters took to the streets of London Saturday, where they were met with a strong counter-demonstration by the local predominately Bengali community, Unite Against Fascism and other groups including English Disco Lovers, a play on the EDL acronym. A number of protesters were arrested by police, including EDL head Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who uses and is generally known under the pseudonym Tommy Robinson.

The EDL originally intended to march through Tower Hamlets, a multicultural borough of London where the East London Mosque is located. Due to a history of violence at EDL demonstrations, however, the Metropolitan Police Service announced this week that the march would need to be redirected.

The EDL leader Robinson was arrested for allegedly breaching the conditions of his bail. He has been convicted of a number of crimes in the past, including assault, conspiracy to commit fraud, and breaching bail.

Molestation of Hindu girls sparks communal tension in Muzaffarnagar, 3 killed.

Muzaffarnagar | Uttar Pradesh | 28 August 2013 :: Security has been stepped up in Kawal village of Muzaffarnagar district as tension prevails after three persons were killed on Tuesday over a dispute which has now culminated into communal rift between two communities.The village witnessed a horrific series of events after two Hindu girls, returning back with their kin Gaurav from college, were molested by Shahnawaz, a local resident of the village. Gaurav first tried to oppose the act but finally decided to go home silently.

After sometime, Gaurav returned with his friend on bike and allegedly attacked Shahnawaz with sharp weapon. Meanwhile, Shahnawaz’s neighbours rushed to his rescue. They nabbed the two youths and beat them mercilessly to death. When Shahnawaz was taken to hospital, he was also declared dead by the doctors. Ironically, the police personnel were present near the spot of the incident but didn’t act in time.

After the three deaths, the security has been tightened and patrolling intensified as tension prevailed in the area. A posse of police have been deployed to maintain law and order.

A case has already been registered in this regard.

DETROIT: Federal judge rules in favor of Terry Jones, says two Dearborn ordinances are unconstitutional

DETROIT — U.S. District Judge Denise Page Hood ruled Friday that the city of Dearborn violated controversial pastor Terry Jones’ First Amendment rights by forcing him and his group, Stand Up America Now, to sign an indemnification agreement before Jones and co-founder Wayne Sapp planned to speak April 7, 2012.

Jones and Sapp have spoken in Dearborn against Islam several times, most recently Oct. 10, 2012, outside Edsel Ford High School to protest what they said is bullying by Muslim students of non-Muslim students. Their request to meet with school officials was denied.

Hood ruled that the ordinance requiring the signed indemnification agreement was a violation of the group’s First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and expressive association, and the ordinance requiring the police chief to grant a special permit only after the indemnification agreement is signed also violates the group’s First Amendment rights.

Jones, Sapp and Stand Up America Now of Gainesville, Fla., were the plaintiffs; the city and Police Chief Ronald Haddad were the defendants.

Police officer Osman Iqbal denies brothel charge

A Birmingham police officer has pleaded not guilty to conspiring to manage a brothel and five charges of committing misconduct in a public office.

Osman Iqbal also denied a money laundering offence and conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to supply.

The 36-year-old will stand trial along with seven other defendants who deny conspiracy to manage a brothel.

An eighth defendant, Jennifer Williams, admitted conspiracy to manage a brothel and conspiracy to supply drugs.

Iqbal, whose address cannot be published for legal reasons, spoke only to confirm his name and enter his pleas at the Warwick Crown Court hearing before being bailed.

He is alleged to have conspired with the other defendants to manage a brothel between January 2011 and September 2012. He is accused of plotting to possess cocaine between October 2011 and September last year.

He was suspended by West Midlands Police earlier this year.

Williams, 30, of Furlong Lane, Cradley, West Midlands, was bailed and will be sentenced on a date to be fixed.

According to a Christian ministry, a Moroccan newspaper is reporting that Mohammed was accused of telling another person about his Christian faith and having Christian books in his home. 
    
He was not allowed to speak with a lawyer or even call his family or friends.

The paper reportedly said he revealed the names of other Moroccan Christians and foreign believers in other cities, and that the prosecutor has ordered those Christians to be brought in.

They objected to police preventing a English Defence League (EDL) march - planned for Saturday - entering Tower Hamlets in east London.

Police said they had imposed restrictions on marchers because they feared an outbreak of "serious public disorder".

Judge Mr Justice King ruled that the police decision was reasonable and proportionate, following a High Court hearing in London.

He blocked a EDL attempt to pursue a judicial review.

When young girls are sold into marriage, as 38,000 are every day, they can expect a life with no education and few opportunities, little public autonomy outside of their adult husband’s control and an increased risk of death from pregnancy or childbirth, which are the number one killer of girls age 15 to 18 in the developing world. One in seven girls born in the developing world is married by age 15, usually sold by her family.

But some girls who grow up in Egypt’s poor rural communities face an even scarier sort of child marriage: the temporary kind. Sex tourism to Egypt tends to spike in the summer, when wealthy men from Gulf countries flood into Egypt and thousands of underage girls are sold by their parents into temporary “marriages,” according to a story by Inter Press Service.

Child sex tourism is difficult to track, but the United Nations estimates that it affects two million children every year, often in countries that are poor but have preexisting tourism infrastructure, such as Thailand, India, Costa Rica and others.

Egypt’s illegal child sex tourism trade appears to have put a regional-friendly spin on the practice by portraying the buying and selling of children as a form of marriage, thus giving them a thin veneer of religious acceptability by circumventing Islamic rules against pre-marital sex. (Despite a 2008 law banning child marriages, enforcement is thought to be low and an Egyptian official told the Inter Press Service that’s it’s nearly ceased since the chaos of the 2011 revolution.) Child marriages are, after all, somewhat common in Arab countries, although not nearly as common as in neighboring regions. And such child marriages often involve “dowries” that human trafficking activists say are akin to a purchase price.

By making the unions temporary, Egyptian child sex tourism manages to capture much of the worst of child marriage and child prostitution. Girls still bear the long-term risks of child marriages – some are expected to double as domestic workers – as well as the routines of children sold for sex in other countries. “Some girls have been married 60 times by the time they turn 18,” an Egyptian government official who works on the issue told Inter Press Service. “Most ‘marriages’ last for just a couple of days or weeks.” read more here

Lt. Cmdr. (retd) Zuhdi Jasser of the U.S. Navy is a Syrian-American physician whose family fled the Baath Regime in Syria to settle in the U.S. in the early 1960s. He, too, is highly critical of his president.

"President Obama has not had a strategy in Syria. Three months into the revolution we were calling for decisive action to support the opposition and enact a no-fly zone which would have given the opposition room to defeat the Assad regime long before it became a full client state of Iran and unleashed the hell of al-Qaida and Hezbollah," he said in e-mail.

Jasser, who heads the American Islamic Forum for Democracy said: "There was no Al-Nusra Front before 2012 in Syria. Now that the atrocity has turned to nerve gas the Obama administration is finally, finally waking up. However, instead of doing something they take the case to the U.S. Congress? We are turning into a laughing stock."

The historical account of Obama's Syrian chemical weapons red line offered by the New York Times is incomplete at best, and downright misleading at worst. Based on interviews with unnamed Obama aides, the account claims that the president's use of the "red line" phrase was unscripted, unduly constraining, and was perhaps mistakenly drawn from election-year conversations about Iran.

Yet as I showed yesterday in, "The Frightening Truth About Syria's WMDs," the "red line" phrase was in constant public discussion with respect to Syria's chemical weapons in the weeks before Obama's initial drawing of the line. Not only that, but a Defense Department spokesman publicly called chemical weapons use by Syria a "serious red line" more than a month before Obama first did so himself. So the notion that Obama's initial "red line" remark was an unscripted error that simply mixed up talk about Iran with Syria is unconvincing. The administration had already drawn a public red line on Syrian chemical weapons use a month before Obama spoke, using precisely those words.

While the Times story does note that in December of 2012 intelligence indicated more disturbing activity at Syria's chemical-weapons sites, it neglects to recount a critical repetition of Obama's red-line remarks at that time. This time, Obama's remarks were clear and unequivocal: "And today I want to make it absolutely clear to Assad and those under his command: The world is watching. The use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable. And if you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences, and you will be held accountable."

Not only were these strong and apparently carefully scripted words used by Obama, but similar statements were made on the same day by White House spokesman Jay Carney and by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Chemical-weapons use, said Hillary, "is a red line for the United States." Hillary Clinton reiterated the red line phrase again on December 5.

If Obama's initial use of the "red line" phrase on in August of 2012 was actually a mistake (which I find doubtful for reasons stated above), the administration could have backed off. But in early December of 2012, they doubled down on the "red line" threat with a fully coordinated set of statements.

This makes the Times account incomplete at best, and downright misleading at worst. Obama cannot put down his red-line remarks to regrettable error. The motivations I suggest in "The Frightening Truth About Syria's WMDs" are more likely. Obama drew his red line under pressure from his humanitarian hawks (and his own humanitarian hawkish inclinations) without thinking through the consequences.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has hit out at the Republican People’s Party (CHP) over its planned visit to Egypt, labeling the visit a chance to send “coup experience” with the military administration in Cairo.

“They are experienced on democracy in the perspective of coups. On this issue, I suppose Turkey’s experiences are not enough; now they will attempt to earn some coup experience outside or convey their own earnings. This is what we think this trip is,” Erdoğan said at a press conference at Ankara’s Esenboğa Airport prior to departing for Russia for the G-20 Summit, on Sept. 4.

Arguing that the CHP has nothing to offer to Egypt and Iraq – which the CHP also recently visited – Erdoğan said the trip would be an opportunity to reveal the CHP’s true colors as regards to its ties with past coup d’états.

Since first being elected, President Obama has made much of his determination to "go it alone" when he can't get his way from Congress. This has resulted in an endless chain of unprecedented, unconstitutional and illegal actions to advance his self-serving political agenda. At every turn, Obama has sought to make Congress irrelevant. Unfortunately the gutless GOP political leadership aided and abetted him, at the very least by doing nothing, and sometimes even colluding in his efforts. Marco Rubio's disgraceful illegal alien "reform" plan comes immediately to mind, but so do the countless "showdowns" with the President, in which Republicans have repeatedly blinked.

But either through sheer stupidity, or likely, some much more malevolent, calculated strategy, Obama has painted himself into an impossible corner by pronouncing a very specific "red line" that, if crossed by our enemies, promised military action. So now when forced by his own words to deliver the goods, what does he do? Something he has never done before: he decides to "consult" Congress.

I don't know who the guy named here is and why he should appear here, but the uploader seems to think it is necessary.

My goodness! How primitive! How can one "abuse" the historical method, when it is just a structure, which the Rationalizer follows, presenting a problem-hypothesis-research-conclusion sequence.

A planned march through Tower Hamlets by far right group the English Defence League looks set to go ahead this weekend - despite threats of legal action if no ban is enforced.

The borough’s mayor, Lutfur Rahman, was snubbed after requesting a meeting with home secretary Theresa May to call on her to ban the march or face a High Court battle.

The Home Office is unable to ban the march without first receiving an application from Scotland Yard – but no such application has been made.

“I’m deeply disappointed that the police and the home secretary have failed to act, despite my formally requesting them to do so,” Mr Rahman said last week.

“I call upon them to see sense, but in the absence of an adequate response I intend to take this matter to the High Court.”

Both substances “could also be used as precursor chemicals in the manufacture of chemical weapons,” according to a report published by the House of Commons Committee on Arms Export Controls in July. Angus Robertson, a Scottish National Party MP, told RT that the issue was raised in the House of Commons on Monday after the licensing had been publicized over the weekend. “Defense ministers had to explain why it was that the UK would even consider granting an export license,” Robertson said. Both sodium fluoride and potassium fluoride can be used in the production of the neurotoxic gas sarin. Large doses of sarin can lead to paralysis, loss of consciousness, convulsions and respiratory failure, and death.

A French imam known for promoting Jewish-Muslim relations said he was physically assaulted in Tunisia by a man who called him a “Zionist.”

Hassen Chalghoumi, the imam of Drancy near Paris, said he was punched in the chest and shoved to the ground on Sunday near the Hotel Gammarth near Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.

“He insulted me, called me a ‘Zionist and collaborator’ and then he hit me,” Chalghoumi was quoted Monday as telling the Le Parisien daily.

Chalghoumi was assaulted in front of his wife and children, who also were hit by the unnamed attacker, the report said. The imam was taken to the hospital, according to the French news agency AFP. Neither he nor his family members sustained serious injuries.

According to the report, hotel staffers detained the man, who addressed Chalghoumi in French, before he was arrested by police.

Chalghoumi, who is well known in France for his involvement in interfaith forums and initiatives, has received many death threats in France for his friendly ties with CRIF, the umbrella group representing French Jewish communities, and for visiting Israel several times. Read more

Hassen Chalghoumi, the imam of Drancy (Seine-Saint-Denis), denounced the attack on Sunday night and his family near Tunis (Tunisia). According to Imam,  widely publicized in France because of his stance , his assailant followed him as he returned on Sunday with his wife and two of their children their hotel in Gammarth, where they are on vacation.

Within seconds, he put me down, "he told the imam, target of harsh criticism, relayed over the internet , for his stance against the burqa and against pro-Palestinian demonstrations of friendship and its relationship with the Jewish community. "It's a real shock," said the imam.

The latest incident of forced marriage of a minor Muslim girl to an Arab national has once again brought to focus vulnerability of women from poorer sections who continue to be victims of sexual exploitation. 

The infamous "Arabbi Kalyanam" (Arab wedding), a social malady prevalent in parts of Kerala, has stirred a raging debate over the evil practice, which has devastated the lives of young girls in the wake of recent episode in which a 17-year-old girl from Kozhikode, living in orphanage, was forced into marriage with an Arab national. 

The Ras al-Khaiamh (UAE) resident Jasim Mohammed Abdul Kareem, after spending two weeks with the girl, returned home and pronounced "talaq" (I Divorce You) over phone. 

Despite universal education and commendable social sector indices, women from underprivileged sections in Kerala still appear to be victims of circumstances beyond their control. 

Decades-long awareness campaigns and grass root actions, financially backward minor girls not only from the Muslim community but also from vulnerable sections like tribals are still victimised in the name of "cross-border weddings", in which they are married off to those coming from abroad or other states without their consent. 

The menace, known under different names like "Arabi Kalyanam", "Mysore Kalyanam" or "Male Kalyanam" in local parlance, based the place from where the groom comes, had been widely prevalent in places like Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, Kasaragod and even in state capital Thiruvananthapuram. 

Poverty-stricken parents, who could not meet the hefty dowry demanded by local youths, were often used to be trapped by "visiting grooms" with the support of local marriage brokers and, in many cases, community elders. 

Initially, the brides are heaped with costly gifts like gorgeous apparels and gold ornaments and cash to lure their parents to force their daughters into marriage. 

After the wedding ceremony, they are taken to honeymoon trips for a few days and even for weeks, after which the groom would leave for their home abandoning the teenage brides to life-long misery and tears.

Turkish police Sunday blocked the entrance to Istanbul's Gezi Park, the epicentre of anti-government protests in June, to prevent a demonstration against a possible military intervention in Syria.

Riot police advanced with shields but held back from using tear gas or water cannon against about 1,000 activists who instead formed a human chain on the city's celebrated Istiklal Avenue, according to an AFP photographer who witnessed the scene.

"United States, killers, stay out of Syria," shouted protesters, who are firmly opposed to Ankara's support for proposed US-led air strikes against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

Smaller human chains were formed in neighbourhoods across Istanbul, with many protests organised by the same groups who had occupied the park to fight against its commercial development.

“Muslim Americans are integral part of our character and history and we rely on your innovation and entrepreneurship to help keep moving this country forward,” Obama said in the message aired at the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) annual convention, a copy of which was obtained by OnIslam.net.
Aired on Saturday, August 31, the message highlighted the contributions made by the American Muslim community from its early history to present day.

“Some of you here lead companies, laboratories and class rooms. Some of you serve honorably, government and in our armed forces, and most importantly is devoted parents, good neighbors and active citizens who help build stronger families and communities, supporting our youth and aiding the less fortunate.”“Over the last half century, you have upheld the proud legacy of American Muslims’ contributions to our national fabric and this gathering is a testament of that tradition,” Obama said.
Obama also focused on efforts by ISNA leadership to serve as an effective partner in promoting inter-religious initiatives in the US and religious freedom for minorities around the world.
“I am especially grateful for the work that ISNA has done to advance interfaith understanding and cooperation here in home and around the world,” he said.
“My administration is proud to be your partner in our shared efforts to promote economic opportunity, accessible healthcare and affordable education in Muslim communities throughout our country.
“So thank you ISNA for your tireless advocacy and commitment to America that realizes the full potential of all its people,” the US President added.
ISNA opened its annual convention in Washington on Friday, August 30, hosting the largest gathering for Muslims in North America.
Themed “Envisioning a More Perfect Union: Building the Beloved Community”, the annual convention is expected to lure thousands of Muslims from North America and around the world.
The event will run from Friday, August 30, to Monday, September 2.
