An Egyptian cleric appearing on a recent religious television show on Iqra TV Europe/Africa told a woman who sent in a question from Norway: It’s okay for Muslim husbands to beat wives, so long as they don’t touch the face.

The Middle East Media Research Instituted reported that cleric Mahmoud Al-Denawy read a question from a woman from Norway during a June 17 show: What’s the Islamic view on the beating of wives? He then said the non-believers — those of faiths other than Islam — often use that issue as a point of criticism.

He then said, MEMRI reported: “Indeed, many people take this as something to stab Islam and to stab Muslims. They say, ‘Here Islam is calling for the beating of wives.’ … There are so many sayings and many misconceptions about this, but they forgot an important thing. Allah says that if there is a problem — if a lady, for example, who is disobedient, she has a bad behavior, for example — the husband should do his best to correct her, to fix this issue.”

Zakir Naik: "Every Muslim should be a terrorist."

Banned scholar's texts in Woolwich Library

"Divisive" works by an Islamic scholar barred from the UK because his presence was ruled not conducive to the public good are available at Woolwich Library.

Dr Zakir Naik was banned in 2010 by the Home Secretary, who found his comments amounted to "unacceptable behaviour".

BBC London has now discovered three of his works in a public library. They contain controversial statements on women, Jews and terrorism.

Greenwich Council has defended the decision to stock the books.

The library is about 200m from the spot where Lee Rigby, an army machine gunner who had served in Afghanistan, was killed in May.

 In one of the works, Indian national Dr. Naik states he is "proud to be a fundamentalist".

The book, written in Urdu, reads: 

"Every Muslim should be a terrorist.

"A terrorist is somebody who spreads terror and fear.

"Therefore every Muslim should be a terrorist towards immoral people. Any thief or criminal or person of vice should be terrified when they see a Muslim."

An Ethiopian man went into a mobile phone shop in Saudi Arabia and stealthily picked money from a woman’s bag before she discovered the theft and chased him.

A YouTube film showed the man quietly tucked his hand into the Saudi woman’s bag as she and two other women were busy with the shop owner.

The film, published in the Arabic language daily Alsaudeh, showed the man managed to pull out some notes without drawing the woman’s attention. He could have left unnoticed but he was evidently too greedy to go.

As he tucked his hand into the bag again, the woman suddenly felt she was being robbed. She chased him but he fled out of the shop, prompting the owner to join the chase. 
The paper did not say where in Saudi Arabia the film was shot and whether the thief was caught.

Writer and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali offered some frank words on the prospect for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians in a wide-ranging interview with Israel Hayom, saying “From the perspective of the Arab leaders, reaching a two-state solution is to betray God, the Koran, the hadith and the tradition of Islam.”

“…the main problem is that you may speak of a peace process, but what you get is a process, not peace. And why is this process so prolonged? Because for the Israelis this issue is a territorial problem. For the Palestinian negotiators, on the other hand, it is not a territorial problem but a religious and ethnic one, It is not only about Palestinians but about all Arabs. Most of all, it is a religious problem.”

Hirsi Ali continues: “But there is no agreement as of today, because on one side it has become religious jihad of all or nothing, while on the other side it is still a territorial issue. Of course I know that there are Israelis who also perceive this as a religious problem; but their numbers pale in comparison to the Muslim side.”

“More and more leaders see that this conflict is not going to be resolved Western-style, namely that all conflicts are resolvable and no-one leaves the table empty-handed,” she says. “In a culture dictated by honor and shame – in addition to the religious issue – defeat of any kind, accepting a compromise, is to leave the room empty-handed. Compromise is loss in this culture. It is very hard to explain this to contemporary Westerners.”

Hirsi Ali says to betray this rigid doctrine would mean certain death for any Palestinian leader “even if he is secular, even an atheist — to leave the negotiating room with the announcement of a two-state solution would mean that he would be killed the minute he walks out.”

“Among Western liberal elites there are those who have actual experience and those who have not. Those who have actual experience with any aspect of Islamic culture or religion…come out — after years of endless abortive attempts — with a completely different perspective,” she continues, before charging: “I think that whoever acts on the presumption that we are all the same and that we are able to solve this — is uninterested, indifferent, and inexperienced.”

“An Arab leader who genuinely wants peace has to convince the Arab people first, must get their endorsement and then go and get peace. That is why the first thing that needs to be worked out is not so much the relationship with Israel but changing the culture, Islamic and Arab” she says, before concluding: “For cultural change to transpire we need one hundred years and more to pass. You can pick any number you want. I am speaking of a lengthy, bloody period. But it is going to change.”

The head of Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization called Monday for the disbanding of a hard-line Islamic group after a pregnant woman was killed in a car accident during illegal raids to curb prostitution during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Islamic Defenders Front, known by its Indonesia acronym FPI, has a long record of vandalizing nightspots, hurling stones at Western embassies and attacking rival religious groups.

“Their attitude does not reflect the teachings of Islam,” said Aqil Siradj, chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama, Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization. “We called on the government to disband the group that did this vandalizing.”

He said he regretted that the government has remained silent as hard-line groups shuttered Christian churches, attacked their worshippers and torched Ahmadiyah and Shiites mosques, which they consider heretical.

The latest incident occurred July 18 in Central Java’s Kendal town. 

About 50 FPI supporters attempted to raid an area they 

believed was allowing prostitution. While fleeing the scene

to escape an angry mob of local residents after vandalizing

 businesses, one of their vehicles hit a couple on a motorbike, 

killing a pregnant woman and injuring her husband.

Western radicals could be learning terrorism skills in Syrian conflict

Americans and Europeans have been joining al Qaeda-affiliated groups in Syria in increasing numbers,

causing concern that these Western radicals could attempt to carry out terrorist attack on the United States upon returning home, experts told Congress Wednesday.

“Syria is becoming a training ground for foreign fighters,” Seth Jones, a former U.S. Special Operations liaison, told lawmakers during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing.

The leftist PFLP, a major faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said that talks' resumption was a unilateral move by President Mahmoud Abbas which did not have the backing of the PLO as a whole.

"The PFLP is against a return to negotiations," said one of the party's leaders, Khalida Jarrar.

"It is an individual move," she said, in allusion to Abbas.

"These talks will be presided over by the United States, just like Oslo 20 years ago," she said of the negotiations that led up to the 1993 accords for limited self-rule.

Employees of a kebab meat retailer were assaulted yesterday after a tabloid revealed that it had sold beef that contained traces of pork to numerous kebab shops.

Several young men entered the premises of Tayyib Food in the western Copenhagen suburb of Taastrup and assaulted the director and another employee. The victims had to be taken to an area A&E to be treated for their wounds.

“They just start hitting us while they shouted and screamed that we had sold them pork and that they had eaten pork because of us,” 

the company’s director told Ekstra Bladet.

Citizens in Brunei have sparked a lively debate on the Brunei Islamic Religious Council-issued directive, which prevents Muslim-owned restaurants from serving in-dining customers.

BANDAR SERI BAGAWAN - The government has announced a total ban on daytime restaurant table service during the remainder of Ramadan, even for non-Muslims.

The Brunei Times said in a weekend story that restaurants were allowed to open and to sell takeout orders.

However, it said, even "non-Muslims are no longer allowed to eat in any restaurant owned or part-owned by Muslims in the daytime this Ramadan."

The $B12 lunch buffet at Choices restaurant in The Brunei Hotel is off until Aug 9, according to a new religious edict.

It said non-Muslims should show respect to Muslims, and not eat in front of them during daylight. Ramadan ends in Brunei on Aug 8.

The Brunei Times, in a quick canvass of restaurants, found last Saturday that most owners were unaware of the new order. It quoted the owner of a Malaysian restaurant and the operator of Gloria Jean's Coffees Brunei as saying they had not received any order covering food service.

An obscure and seldom enforced law in Brunei provides for fines for any Muslim who eats in public during Ramadan.

Why It May Be Easy for Huma Abedin to Stand by Her Man

One thing the mainstream media knows about Huma Abedin is that she is elegant. Time reported on how Weiner’s “elegant and accomplished wife… declared her love and support for him, visibly pained at having to speak in public as the sad, sordid details of his repeat behavior were exposed yet again.” The Wall Street Journal lamented:

Watching the elegant Huma Abedin stand next to her man Tuesday as he explained his latest sexually charged online exchanges was painful for a normal human being to watch.

What they’re less sure of is why this elegant woman would stand by the increasingly ridiculous Weiner. Time thinks, rather fancifully, that it’s because “divorce can still be stigmatizing in some social circles where parents are particularly ambitious about providing the absolute best environment for their children” – and because, well, Huma just “loves this guy despite it all.”

Most others, however, agree that it is because she is seeking power and influence, and thinks – however improbably – that Anthony Weiner is still the pathway to them. Even Weiner’s sexting partner Sydney Leathers said of the Weiner-Abedin union: “It almost feels to me like it’s more of an arrangement, or a business relationship, than a marriage.” She said she thought Abedin stuck with Weiner “for the power, for the fame, for the stature.”

Maybe so. And she also may be staying in it because Weiner’s indiscretions just don’t matter to her that much – not necessarily because they have a sham marriage, but because Abedin is approaching the marriage from an Islamic perspective.

Huma Abedin comes from a family of devout Muslims with extensive ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. She herself, according to the Washington Post, is “a practicing Muslim.” If this is accurate, and Huma Abedin has never denied it, then it raises a number of questions that have never been answered. Islamic law prohibits a Muslim woman from marrying a non-Muslim man. A Muslim man may marry a non-Muslim woman, but not the other way around.

Consequently, when a non-Muslim man begins a relationship with an observant Muslim woman, he is usually pressured to convert to Islam, and such conversion is made a condition of the marriage. This only happens, of course, if the Muslim family is devout and observant enough to make sure it happens. We know that Abedin’s family is devout, and that apparently she herself is also. But in today’s political climate, even to ask the question of whether Weiner converted to Islam to marry her is to invite a cascade of ridicule. Apparently it is inconceivable to the leftist media that a practicing Muslim might want to observe the strictures of Islamic law regarding marriage.

But ridicule, however correct Saul Alinsky may have been in saying that it is a potent weapon to discredit and silence one’s opposition, doesn’t make the questions go away. And the questions regarding how Huma Abedin’s status as a “practicing Muslim” may affect her marriage to Weiner don’t end there. Islamic law also allows a Muslim man to have as many as four wives, and to enjoy also the sexual favors of his “captives of the right hand [milk al-yamin]” (Qur’an 4:24) – that is, sex slaves.

As hard as it may be to believe, this is not a fabrication of venomous “Islamophobes.” The Egyptian Sheikh Abu-Ishaq al-Huwayni declared in May 2011 that,

The milk al-yamin are the sex-slaves. You go to the market, look at the sex-slave, and buy her. She becomes like your wife, (but) she doesn’t need a (marriage) contract or a divorce like a free woman, nor does she need a wali. All scholars agree on this point–there is no disagreement from any of them. [...] When I want a sex slave, I just go to the market and choose the woman I like and purchase her.

Right around the same time, on May 25, 2011, a female Kuwaiti activist and politician, Salwa al-Mutairi, also spoke out in favor of the Islamic practice of sexual slavery of non-Muslim women, emphasizing that the practice accorded with Islamic law and the parameters of Islamic morality:

Sex slaves are not forbidden by Islam.…While the free woman requires a marriage contract, the sex slave does not–she only needs to be purchased by her husband, and that’s it. Therefore the sex slave is different than the free woman.

If Huma Abedin is indeed a “practicing Muslim,” then there is no reason to think that she doesn’t believe in the Qur’an’s allowances for polygamy and sex slavery (for men only, that is), and thus it could well be that her husband’s appalling behavior simply doesn’t appall her. She may accept the idea that a husband of a Muslim wife may well have a wandering eye, and go on the prowl for other women, and even perhaps marry one or more of those other women while remaining married to her.

If one is in a marriage of convenience in the first place, assumptions like this could make accepting Weiner’s behavior all the easier – and may account for how Mrs. Weiner was able to maintain her elegance in the most trying of circumstances last week.

President Obama promised that the IRS would fully cooperate with Congress in its investigation into the IRS targeting of conservatives.

Now, in a bipartisan letter the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Ways and Means Committee are complaining that the IRS is dragging it heels with Congress.

Two lawmakers probing the U.S. Internal Revenue Service for its scrutiny of Tea Party and other conservative groups complained on Wednesday the IRS had handed over just a fraction of documents needed for their investigation.

Republican Dave Camp, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Sander Levin, the senior Democrat on the committee, said they had received just 13,000 pages of the 65 million pages of information the IRS had identified as possibly relevant.

"We are concerned that, at this rate, the full production will take months," the lawmakers said in a letter to acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel. They asked Werfel to explain how the IRS was sorting through the documents.

The IRS’s response?  The report continues, “The IRS said on Wednesday it had received the letter and planned to have more information available soon.”

Just like their response the first time.  Don’t worry, it’s coming.  Just like don’t worry, the targeting ended years ago or don’t worry it was just some rogue agents in Cincinnati or don’t worry senior IRS officials in let’s say the Chief Counsel’s office had nothing to do with this.

President Obama says the IRS targeting is just another one of those “phony scandals” that we should ignore.

Mr. President, if it’s a phony scandal, prove it.  Produce the documents. Lay out once and for all how the targeting began, continued for years, and forced conservative groups to turn over their donor lists.

The fact is the longer this drags out, the more evidence emerges that this scandal goes up, up, up the chain of command.

It’s time for the truth.

As the high-profile founder and chairman of the Conservative Muslim Forum (CMF), Lord Sheikh’s behaviour is likely to cause deep embarrassment for Tories as they try to forge alliances with traditional Muslim voters. 

The peer – who has a daughter 15 years older than the waitress – acts as Mr Cameron’s ambassador to the wider Muslim world, as well as drumming up support for the Tories in Britain.

Recently he said in an interview: ‘I joined the Conservative Party as its policies and ideologies match our own traditions and culture that are based on strong work ethics and family values.’

Two weeks ago, Lebanese women were compelled to recognize once again that they are left to be victims of violence in many forms — including murder — without any legislation protecting them or holding the aggressor accountable. The reason for that is the position of some clerics, who justify these views using religious convictions and concepts.

Roula Yaacoub was the 24th Lebanese woman to be killed in the past three years, and whose murder has thus far gone legally unpunished. It seems that she died from torture and abuse at the hands of a suspect who is none other than her husband. Lebanese laws lack explicit articles that protect women in this regard, under the pretext of religions, which have their own personal status laws in Lebanon and prohibit any modern legislation negating their religious provisions.

Roula’s murder, which took place in the town of Halba in northern Lebanon on July 9, has brought to the forefront the issue of the draft law on protecting women from domestic violence, which has been frozen for four years now and still provokes many absurd religious stances. In 2009, the preliminary draft law was drawn up by NGOs concerned with human rights and women’s rights in Lebanon. Under the pressure of these organizations, the draft law became a serious proposal and was put its last form by the Ministry of Justice’s Consulting and Legislation Committee in March 2009. Afterwards, the law spent years on the agenda of the Lebanese cabinet, which finally endorsed it on April 26, 2010, and referred it to parliament. 

After more than a year, the law made it to a parliamentary subcommittee tasked with studying it. The committee held its first meeting in May 2011, and that was enough to flare up the situation. As soon as the subcommittee launched discussions, pressure from some Muslim clerics showered onto its members to the extent that the stances of some MPs seemed to be a reflection of what their religious authorities dictated.

On June 23, 2011, Dar al-Ifta, which is the religious Sunni authority in Lebanon, issued a statement reiterating the “unequivocal refusal of any draft law that violates the provisions of Islam under shiny titles, such as protection against violence.” The statement said that the law risks “disintegrating Muslim families in Lebanon and preventing children from being raised according to Islam, in addition to causing a conflict of competences between the concerned civil and Islamic courts.”

This statement came as a result of pressure from Sunni clerics who, days earlier, on April 17, 2011, staged a protest in opposition to the law on protecting women. The Islamic Association for Preachers, an organization of Sunni clerics in Lebanon, was the one calling for this protest.

Israel has agreed to release 24 Israeli Arab prisoners serving life sentences who were incarcerated before the 1993 Oslo Accords, having already agreed to free 82 pre-Oslo Palestinian prisoners, Israel Radio reported Saturday. The releases would be carried out in phases, the radio report said, in parallel with progress at Israeli-Palestinian peace talks which are set to resume next week.

If true, this would appear to mean all the pre-Oslo prisoners would go free as the talks continue. The Palestinian Authority had long sought the prisoners’ release as a precondition for resuming talks, a demand Israel refused. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had reportedly long been offering to free several dozen of the pre-Oslo prisoners, many of whom were convicted for terrorist crimes involving multiple murders, but had balked at releasing them all.

Anti-Islamist Activist Hirsi Ali: Arab Leaders Believe ‘Reaching a Two-State Solution is to Betray God’

Hirsi Ali says that the two sides, the Israelis and Palestinians, have diametrically opposed concerns, and this has lead to the current stalemate.

“…the main problem is that you may speak of a peace process, but what you get is a process, not peace. And why is this process so prolonged? Because for the Israelis this issue is a territorial problem. For the Palestinian negotiators, on the other hand, it is not a territorial problem but a religious and ethnic one, It is not only about Palestinians but about all Arabs. Most of all, it is a religious problem.”

Hirsi Ali continues: “But there is no agreement as of today, because on one side it has become religious jihad of all or nothing, while on the other side it is still a territorial issue. Of course I know that there are Israelis who also perceive this as a religious problem; but their numbers pale in comparison to the Muslim side.”

Describing Islam as an “Orthopraxy”— something that must be fought for, Hirsi Ali says that what is needed most— compromise—is unlikely to be attainable.

“More and more leaders see that this conflict is not going to be resolved Western-style, namely that all conflicts are resolvable and no-one leaves the table empty-handed,” she says. “In a culture dictated by honor and shame – in addition to the religious issue – defeat of any kind, accepting a compromise, is to leave the room empty-handed. Compromise is loss in this culture. It is very hard to explain this to contemporary Westerners.”

UK: 500,000 Immigrants on Social Housing in Last Decade

Revealed: How 500,000 immigrants have been given social housing in last decade as number of families on waiting list hits record high

• 1.8million families are now on the waiting list on social housing 
• Nearly 470,000 of the 4 million migrants who arrived in the last ten years were given council homes
• David Cameron launched plans to give local people priority on waiting lists
• Clampdown will see migrants only become eligible for social housing after two years in the UK

Nearly half a million immigrants have been given taxpayer-funded homes over the past decade.

The revelation comes as the number of families on the waiting list for social housing hits a record 1.8million. Most are British born.

Of the four million migrants who arrived between 2001 and 2011, 469,843 were allocated council or housing association properties.

Around 1.2million foreigners now live in social housing – one in eight of the total. In London the figure is thought to be as high as one in five. 

The national census statistics, which were released yesterday, highlight fears about increased pressure on public services when Romanians and Bulgarians win free access to jobs in this country in January.

The figures also show the effects of the large-scale immigration encouraged by the Tony Blair and Gordon Brown governments. 

According to the census, 105,506 of the immigrants who found social housing after 2001 were from Eastern European states that joined the EU in 2004, most of them Poles.

 

In the mid-2000s, Whitehall officials estimated that the cost to taxpayers of maintaining a single social housing unit was £620 a year. 

Assuming each unit is occupied by four people, that would put the housing costs of post-2001 migrants at between £5billion and £8billion.

Sir Andrew Green, of the MigrationWatch think-tank, said: ‘The figures serve to underline the huge costs of mass immigration – costs often ignored by the immigration lobby.’

In 2009, a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission claimed there was ‘no evidence to support the perception that new migrants are getting priority over UK-born residents’.

The research found no evidence of abuse of the system such as queue jumping or providing false information.

But in March David Cameron announced a clampdown, including plans for a local residence test. 

Local people will be given priority on waiting lists for social housing and migrants will become eligible only after two years.

Councils say the fundamental flaw in the plan is they will still be obliged to help any EU migrants who present themselves as homeless. 

Mike Jones, of the Local Government Association, says: ‘If we don’t house them that means we are going to have to deal with them under the homeless laws which cost us a great deal more.’

£2M HOME FOR SOMALI ASYLUM SEEKER

While most migrants would expect a modest home, some councils have spent huge amounts of public money on housing families who arrive on their doorstep.

Somali asylum seeker Saeed Khaliif was given a £2million home in one of the country’s most exclusive neighbourhoods in 2011.

The 49-year-old was granted housing benefits of almost £8,000 a month to live in the six-bedroom property with his wife Sayida and their children.

The couple demanded to be moved to West Hampstead, North-West London, after deciding their home in the Midlands was inadequate.

Their new house boasted a 90ft garden and was refurbished before their arrival.

It is understood Mr Khaliif has up to eight children and lives on benefits. He has not worked since arriving here three years ago.

Although housing benefit has been capped at £400 a week, the Khaliifs were able to claim more because they moved before the change came into force. 

According to sources, the house was being advertised to rent at £7,800 per month.
